Shui Lin’s Birthday at Checkers, Damansara Height – Part 1

25 Apr

All I can remember from the “delayed” Shui Lin’s birthday celebration is a lot of foods and a lot of pork! So much food that I have to break yesterday’s event into 2 parts. Part 1 is about the “launching” of Shui Lin’s latest fashion, the E-diot cum birthday celebration at the Checkers, Damansara Height. Part 2 is our second round celebration at Vintry at Medan Damansara. I won’t be writing much though, because I realized pictures tell better story then me writing, so enjoy!

For her birthday, we gave Shui Lin three T-shirts all designed in-house. The main designers are TC and Calista…hahaha…the rest of the team which include myself are the opinion – givers…hehehe! It is still team work, okay!

Yeah, that is the “launching” of Shui Lin’s latest fashion, the E-diot…

See, how happy is Shui Lin. I think she is too ecstatic, that she got nothing to say but to dance…

Shui Lin with one of the designer, Ms. Calista Lee…

Now, you know you are “spaztial” to us, Shui Lin (hehe). Happy Belated Birthday, to you

Let’s talk about the food at the Checkers. This is the first time I came about a restaurant that has no signboard but with extremely yummy food owned by two very “interesting” owners. You will know why later…

1. TC, the mastermind from the shirt design to the dinner and Calista…

2. Shui Lin, Hiew, Linda and KF, my clan master…

I have done some short research on the Checkers at Damansara Height. Some called the restaurant the “best kept secret in town”. I have to agree with that statement. This restaurant isn’t easy to locate and most interestingly, the restaurant doesn’t even have a sign board!!!

I thought sign board is the cheapest publicity for any business???

Even without a signboard, this place is full almost every evening (from what I heard). The seats in the restaurant is kinda limited also. If I am not mistaken, there are only maximum 15 “single” tables available in the restaurant. People normally go to the restaurant in a group, so I assumed the restaurant can fit maximum 5 groups only. Therefore, if you wanna dine at the Checkers, please book few days in advance…

Once you are there, follow this sequence… find the younger owner, talk some crap with him for a while, ask him what he has for the day other than in the menu, listen to his recommendation, order and wait for your food. After a while you will notice what’s so “interesting” about the owners. Checker have two owners, if I have not mistaken…

Next is the food… I am not a good commentator when comes to food. I have very limited vocabulary when come to describe food. But I can assure you, the food at Checkers are delicious (see what I mean) and they use the best ingredients for their food…

1. Grilled Expensive Mushroom and Grilled Tomato Soup…

2. Some Pasta (which I don’t remember the name) and Mexican Sausage…

3. Some Pasta (which I don’t remember the name) and the famous Lord of the Ribs (LOTR)…

TC, cutting the LOTR for us…

4. Stuffed Grilled Calamari (just don’t ask what is the filling) and Pork Chop…

5. The fat layer from the Pork Chop and Scampi with bread…

I hope the pictures have done a good job by showing to you how good is the food at Checkers. You already have the visual, what is lacking is the smell and the opportunity to taste. If you are interested to dine at the restaurant, I have already included a map and address to the restaurant. Book in advance using this number: 03-2095 3304 before going there…

Be prepared to pay for the food and don’t be late or you might lose your booking. Just don’t show the “e-diot” face like Linda if you so happen to arrive late…haha! Sorry Linda… you are still my favorite person in office…

Part 2 is coming…

Outing @ The Full House Restaurant…

13 Mar

On Wednesday night, me, RuehYinn, Jolene, Jenli, Jessica and Brian, headed to Full House at NZX, Ara Damansara to hang out and yum char with Jolene because her birthday is coming up in a few days time.

A brief introduction of Fullhouse: Fullhouse is a lifestyle store and cafe, where you can dine and shops at the same time. You will feel extremely cozy when you walk in. On the second floor, there are various collection of beautiful Korean designed clothing which you can purchase too. If shopping is not your intention to Fullhouse, then feel free to find table along the walkway or the balcony to dine. The feeling is as though you are dining at the garden.. :-)

Pork Noodles @ SS15, Subang Jaya

11 Jan

A short blog entry from me today. I’ve got to wake up early in the tomorrow morning to attend weekly church meeting, so getting enough sleep is my utmost priority…hehe!

Allow me to introduce this infamous pork noodles at SS15…

These are few reasons why this pork noodle stall is famous (based on the survey I made):-

1. That bowl of noodles is deliciously cooked;

2. People say the owner of the stall is a bit stuck up a.k.a LCLY;

3. You have to wait 40 – 50 mins for a bowl of noodle; and

4. lastly, everybody else think they are famous…

This is what I think! If you are ever going for this noodle, my advice to you is never go there alone. No! No! It is not because the place is not safe. But the rumors is right, you indeed have to wait 40 – 50 mins for a bowl of noodle. Bring your friends so that while you are waiting, you can talk to your friends and won’t look too odd.

After 10 minutes, we are still waiting for our food. This is the prove. Jason and Kevin are not perturbed by the waiting period because they have companion…

Jen Li and Jeffrey feel the same too. Talk and talk…

And if you aren’t the talkative type, you can camwhore with your camera or camera phone, whichever works for you. James Lim and me…

After a while, the aunty will bring in the chopstick and chillies but don’t get over excited because that doesn’t mean your food is coming…hehe!!

JenLi and Jeffrey also wanted to take picture. I guess, they are out of topic..hehehe…

If you have run out of topic to talk with the person next to you, expand your circle to people next next to you…hehehe! Just remember, keep talking while waiting or else you will start to complain. :-)

Now my time to take picture with my sweetheart. She remains calm while waiting..hehehe!

If you stick to my suggestion, 40 minutes will pass like a blink of eye. When the food arrive, stop talking and start eating..hehe! Here is my verdict of the pork noodles. I like the soup a lot and I think the soup is very delicious. I am not surprise since they cook the food with generous portion of  pork intestines, liver and meat. You can’t get wrong with that…hehe! You can have a variety of noodles to go with the soup. You can have..

1. Hor Fur…

2. Lou Shu Fun and of course yellow noodles if you want…

My recommendation therefore, is to have a try at this pork noodles’ shop. I personally love the blend of the soup. The texture of the noodle is ordinary but when it comes it the soup, the bowl of noodles become extraordinary. Really!! If you are big fan of pig intestine, liver and of course pork, then you will definitely love this place. But please don’t bring your friends or family members who are not patient or else you won’t have peace finishing that bowl of noodle, what more to enjoy the food…hehe! Order before you find a seat. You will definitely find a seat before the food arrive. That’s for sure…

The big bowl is priced at RM5.50 and the small one at RM4.80. If you are super hungry, then request the aunty to add egg into the noodle but of course with extra charge…hehe! The stall is at Restoran Pomander. It is just right behind the Taylor’s Business School…

The stall is located at:-

No 78, Jalan SS15/4B.

Friends Gathering @ the Lookout Point…

7 Jan

One problem I realized about grown up adult is NOT HAVE ENOUGH TIME for OLD FRIENDS. No, I did not just realized this just a second ago. I knew this phenomenon long time ago but never really make any effort to reverse the bad habit. Here are some of the possible reasons (of excuses if you want it) why grown up adult don’t have time for old friends:-

1. Too busy with works – it’s true, we spend more than 1/3 of our day at work, another 1/3 sleeping and relaxing and another 1/3 doing things which virtually add no value to life like stuck in traffic jam, day dreaming, taking off clothing to shower and etc.

2. Too busy with relationship – no man is an island, that’s what everyone say but I also found out that in many case every couple is an island. Believe it or not, when you have a life – partner you rarely have spare time for other kind of relationship like friendship. That is bad…

3. Distance – frankly speaking with Malaysia’s road traffic condition, sometimes I feel it is much better to stay at home than to go out. As if the traffic before and after going to work is not enough. With friends living at different locations, sometimes I feel really lazy to be on the road again.

4. Finances – I believe this is one of the major reason. Grown up adults have more commitments and commitment sometimes involved a lot of monies. Going out which is a kind of commitment, therefore, requires money. As a result, people go out less so that they can save more for other commitments like buying a house, car, getting married, buy baby’s milk powder and so on. They are important, don’t you think so?

5. Other commitments – These are the commitments other than relationship, works and so on. Other commitments involve going to gym, attending church, doing house chores and community service to name a few. With such commitments, how much time left for others?…

However, I am fortunate enough to meet up with my old friends two days ago. Some of them I have not met for almost 8 years already. Allow me to introduce to you my friends:-

1. Caryn and Cristin, my sister’s high school friends. No they are not sisters. Anyway, I came from boys’ school and my sister studied in the convent. I don’t quite remember how I met them and why they are closer to me than my sister (that is how I feel, maybe I am wrong). Caryn is staying permanently in KL after 2 years in U.K. and Cristin is living and working in U.K. I have known them for more than 10 years now but it feels like yesterday. But, I think I can use all my fingers to calculate how many times we met over the years. Sorry guys..

2. Damon and Wai Yeen, my best – est friend of all. I knew Damon since Standard 1 in Perlis and we’re best friend since then. I met Wai Yeen the first time in 1999 when Damon decided to bring me along to meet up with his internet friend. That was 9 years ago. Now they are residing permanently in Australia. It was amazing how they first met over the internet, then in person, fell in love and now they are already married. You are the best, Damon …

And of course Juleen and I. I knew her since 1998 at college but I am not sure she knew me then. She is pretty but I am not good looking. I used to stalked her in college but I don’t think she even knew I exist. Only able to get to know her better early 2006 and now she is my fiancee… :-)

But do you know how to gauge whether you have a good friendship?

A good friendship is when you get together with your friends after a looOoooog time and you still can continue the conversation when it last stop. You do not need a long warming up session to kick start the conversation. You just talk and laugh non – stop right after you meet. That is a good friendship. See, how we talk…(non stop and we laugh a lot)…

And with the right ambience everything will be just perfect. We met up at Bread & Olives Cafe located at Lookout Point, Ampang. It is a cafe located on top of a hill serving Middle Eastern food. The food is above average (a lil pricey too) but I enjoy the ambience. To know more about this cafe, click here.

Inside the restaurant…

And if you sit outside the cafe, your view will be this one… (beautiful)

And lastly our food..

and special Arabic Mint Tea, sponsored by Damon and Wai Yeen…

Before we part, I find myself a little sad because I am not sure when I am going to meet up with them again. One in Australia, one in U.K, one in Ampang and another one in Shah Alam. But I’m glad I make the right choice to meet up with them despite feeling a little tired that night. Or else, I will be sleeping at home and miss all the good laughter with them. I think this new year I ought to make more effort to keep in touch with old friends. At least give them a call. No more excuses. You should too.. PICK UP YOUR PHONE NOW and you will be glad you did

Restoran Well Cook Gourmet…

15 Sep

Last weekend after church service, as usual our cell group went to makan, and this time we visited Restaurant Well Cook Gourmet. The restaurant is just situated in SS14.

Some fact about this restaurant: It started off as a small stall in the 1987 and they offer delicious Penang taste food at a reasonable price, up to 38 dishes like in a food court but all house in a shop. The special thing about this restaurant is that, this is the only shop in whole Malaysia where you can find fried laksa. Most people came to this restaurant to have a taste of their fried laksa.

Some of the food that we ordered:

The famous Fried Laksa…

Jawa Mee…

Claypot Prawn Mee…

Overall, the food is simple but delicious. On top of that, the pricing is reasonable and the restaurant is clean. Operating hours is from 12pm to 9pm daily.

Give it a try and you won’t be disappointed, I guarantee. For more info, you can also visit their website.

Blueberry and Lemony Cupcakes & Fruitburst Cupcakes

20 Jul

This week I have tried baking new cupcakes. They are the wonderful Blueberry and Lemony cupcakes and Fruitburst cupcakes.

Here are some of the photos that I took:

Blueberry and Lemony Cupcakes

and

Fruitburst Cupcakes

Cranberry Raisins

Cranberry Raisin

I personally think alittle hint of lemon would be good in a cupcake with some lovely blueberry marbled on top. From the top it looked really nice.

As for the Fruitburst Cupcakes, they are packed with Cranberries and Raisins to give the fruity sweetness in these cupcakes. Cranberries are expensive over here in this part of the world. And the rich deep red color is very appealing.

Cranberries are a source of antioxidants and phytochemicals that may reduce urinary tract infections commonly in females and as anti-cancer agents. Cranberries are rich in Vitamin C, dietary fiber, and dietary mineral.

As for raisins, they are actually dried grapes. Raisins are sweet due to its high content of fructose, a type of simple sugar, and they are also high in antioxidants qualities.

Restoran SS2 Murni at SS2, Petaling Jaya

14 Jul

If you’d to ask me to suggest a good mamak, the first thought that comes into my mind is Murni Restaurant at SS2. This is a popular mamak where you can see a long stretch of tables along the sidewalk. Some tables even overflow onto the road.

ss2 murni mamak

Murni Restaurant is famous for mamak fusion food. You can get conventional mamak food with a touch of creativity from Western and Chinese food here. However, we can’t possibly name all the food. If you want to know what they have to offer, just ask the waiter, they can name you everything in 30 seconds. hehehe…

We had their famous Roti Hawaii… (murtabak alike with mayoneise sauce)

roti hawaii

and the content, the minced chicken… (you can order beef or mutton too)

And, the Claypot “Loh Shi Fan”…

ss2 murni mamak loh shi fan

accompanied by Teh Tarik Ice and RuehYinn’s favourite Coffee ‘O’ Ice.

At the end of the night, we had a satisfying supper. We only spent RM13 tonight. If not because RuehYinn needed to pump gasoline, we might end up sleeping early only…

“Cheap and Nice” Pork Ball Noodle

11 Jul

— Backdated Post 6 July 2008 —

How much would you pay for a bowl of regular pork ball noodle, today? How about for the big bowl? Let me guess … consensus would suggest RM3.80 – RM4.00 for a small bowl whereas RM4.30 – RM4.50 for a big bowl!

Then, allow us to suggest you a place where you still can have a bowl of regular and big noodle for RM3.30 and RM3.80 respectively…and we are darn serious! However, be reminded it’s only economical for those living around Shah Alam area. Of course, unless you are adventurous enough to explore Sri Muda’s wet market in Shah Alam.

I had Loh Shu Fan Pork Noodle…

and RuehYinn had Hor Fun Pork Noodle…

His Hor Fun before he finished them in minutes…

You have the choice of Loh Shu Fan, Hor Fan, Mee Fan or Yellow Noodles…

We believe this stall is a ‘hidden gem’, an isolated and unknown stall which offer affordable and delicious pork noodles. The stall also sells other kind of noodles like fish ball noodle and prawn noodle. We have yet to try them though…

We both like the ‘simplicity’ of the noodle. If you try, you will soon realized, the soup is very “cheng” (it is called clear in English) and not too oily. Despite that, the taste of the noodle is not being compromised.

And our drinks …

It was also a good opportunity for me to show RuehYinn, I am a good future wife who not only good in shopping but also wet – marketing (wonder this word ever exist?)

Some of the photo in Sri Muda’s wet market…

Hustle bustle in Sri Muda wet market…

Sri Muda Wet Market

You can find the stall, in the food court area of Sri Muda’s wet market:-

Sri Muda Wet Market Food Court

The stall do not have any name. Therefore, I can only leave you guys with these:-

stall number at sri muda market, shah alam

Look up and look for Stall No. 248. The stall looks like this…

Sri Muda market, shah alam

Taman Sri Muda is located at Seksyen 25, Shah Alam. The wet market is located behind the Sri Muda’s shop lots. You will find the food court, right opposite of Sri Kota Convenient Store…

Hope you guys enjoy the search and also the food :-)

Penang Asam Laksa @ SS2 Pasar Malam, Petaling Jaya

7 Jul

Now you don’t have to drive up to Penang to have a bowl of good Asam Laksa. You can have equally delicious Penang Asam Laksa at SS2 pasar malam, Petaling Jaya. No really, we aren’t exaggerating…

asam laksa ss2

and the noodle…

asam laksa ss2

RuehYinn and I love this asam laksa. This is the 2nd week in a row we have the same asam laksa. Here are the reasons why:-

1. the portion is pretty generous; more than the average laksa you get anywhere else;

2. the price is reasonable. A small bowl is RM3.80 and a big bowl is RM4.30;

3. we extremely love the idea of having the “hay kor”. In English, it is called Prawn paste; and

4. the soup is tastefully good.

However, RuehYinn and I have contrary view on the fish pieces that comes with the asam laksa. He prefers the fish to be fully shredded and blended into the soup. He claimed that is the original way of cooking Penang Asam Laksa.

As for me I am relatively neutral but amazed that the fish pieces are reasonably big…

asam laksa fish ss2

Very good business and the crowd…

ss2

My advice to you… please remember to bring tissue if you decided to try out the asam laksa. You will know why… :-)

tissue at ss2 pasar malam

Else you can buy a coconut drink to cool down your body. The stall is adjacent to the asam laksa’s stall…

Penang Asam Laksa’s stall is located at the SS2 Mamak, opposite the police station’s quarters. Since it is a pasar malam stall, I’ll leave you guys with the owner’s vehicle plate number (in case):-
